Unconscious Bias: How Does It Affect Us?
We all like to think of ourselves as objective beings, making decisions based on logic and reason. But did you know a silent operator is influencing your choices and behaviours? Meet the unconscious bias, subtle prejudices we hold without even realising it.
Man’s task is to become conscious of the contents that press upward from the unconscious. Carl Jung
Unconscious biases are automatic judgements or stereotypes that we form about people based on their race, gender, age, socio-economic status, and many other factors. They are shaped by our personal experiences, cultural background, societal narratives, and upbringing. From the books we’ve read to the stories our grandparents told, every interaction leaves an imprint, moulding our biases.
But how does this affect us? For starters, these biases can unintentionally skew our decisions in every sphere of life, from the workplace to our social circles:
- Decision Making: Whether hiring a new team member or choosing a flatmate, unconscious biases might lead us to favour one individual over another, not necessarily based on merit but due to these hidden prejudices.
- Interpersonal Relationships: Biases can hinder our ability to connect with diverse groups, limiting our worldviews and experiences.
- Self Perception: Ironically, we’re not just biased towards others. Internalised biases can affect how we view ourselves, sometimes limiting our own ambitions or potential.
Awareness is the first step to change. Recognising and challenging our unconscious biases allows for fairer, more inclusive decisions and richer, more diverse relationships. Let’s strive to understand our minds better, ensuring our biases don’t unconsciously direct our life’s narrative.
Remember: when you know, truly know who you are you make conscious choices rather than those that are unconsciously implanted
